Also included are more than 100 campsites and points of interest! All-in-all, The Total Package includes more than 1,000 miles of adventure through the Commonwealth.
VAT: The Pedlar River Loop
The Pedlar River Loop takes you off of the main Virginia Adventure Trail route and guides you along 54 miles of some of the lower George Washington National Forests best seasonal trails! When creating the VAT, some great trails had to be omitted, due to their seasonal closures, and the Pedlar River Loop brings a few of them into the VAT trail system! Enchanted Creek, Hog Camp, and Coon Bridge can now be traveled by those riding the VAT (seasonal closures permitting)! The Pedlar River Loop includes a handful of good campsites, so the weary VAT traveler has some additional options for stopping for the night. The Pedlar River Loop is best traveled in the summer and fall, due to seasonal trail closures. Please consult the Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Map for specific closure dates.
The Tennessee-Carolina Adventure Trail
The Tennessee-Carolina Adventure Trail is the newest overland route in the southern U.S.! Spanning 640 miles, the TCAT begins in the Chattahoochee National Forest in Northern Georgia, where it branches off from the Georgia Adventure Trail. The TCAT then makes its way northward through the Nantahala National Forest, hitting some of the best small towns, forest roads, and campsites in the southeast! After skirting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and passing through the Pisgah National Forest, the TCAT eventually ends at the TN/VA border, where it runs into the Virginia Adventure Trail. The TCAT passes through western North Carolina, into an area hit hard by Hurricane Helene. Be prepared for possible trail closures, and please be respectful of the rebuilding of lives that's going on in that area.
VAT: The Allegheny Loop
The Allegheny Loop features 145 miles of trails and backroads that weren't included in the Virginia Adventure Trail when it was routed. Seasonal closures and routing considerations prevented many outstanding forest roads from being included in the VAT, and now many of them are finally connected together and ready to explore! The Allegheny Loop diverges from the VAT near Goshen, VA and makes its way southwest, before meeting up with Virgina's wettest trail, Pads Creek! Depending on water levels, your rig will be put to the test by the water crossings at Pads Creek. The loop meets up with Jack Mountain, passing very near Douthat State Park, and its outstanding camping and recreational activities. The Loop finishes up by meeting up with Forest Road 55/Allegheny, skirting the Virginia/West Virginia state line, before heading east along VA-84, and meeting back up with the VAT at Lower Fork Road. If you've already conquered all 675 miles of the Virginia Adventure Trail, this is your chance to tack on another 145 miles of Virginia's best!
The Virginia Adventure Trail
The Virginia Adventure Trail is an approximately 675 mile self-guided overland route that crosses the commonwealth, south-to-north. The VAT begins at the VA/TN line, near Damascus, VA and makes its way north, before eventually ending at the VA/WV line, near Fulks Run, VA. The VAT connects hundreds of miles of Virginia’s outstanding offroad trails and forest roads. The trail is easily completed in any 4×4 vehicle with sufficient ground clearance. For riders wanting more challenge, some of Virginia’s more technical routes are included as optional routes. Potts Mountain Jeep Trail, Bald Mountain Jeep Trail, and Union Springs are all included as optional sections. No seasonally closed trails are included in the main route. The VAT is open year-round!
The VAT-to-KAT Connector
The VAT to KAT connector adds 170 miles to the Virginia Adventure Trail and officially completes the VAT system! The VAT to KAT also connects the Virginia Adventure Trail to the famed Kentucky Adventure Tour! Starting in Appalachia, VA, the route branches off of the "Main 4" section of the KAT, and heads east, passing through parts of the Jefferson National Forest, and by High Knob. The route makes its way further east to the city of Bristol, where riders of the VAT will spend several blocks on the famous State St, straddling the state line between Bristol, VA and Bristol, TN! Continuing east, the VAT to KAT passes South Holston Lake, and dips south, into Tennessee, where it ends at the TN/VA line, and the official start point of the main Virginia Adventure Trail route! The VAT-to-KAT makes it possible to travel the Kentucky Adventure Tour and then onto the Virginia Adventure Trail with no break in the route, creating nearly 2,000 miles of overland adventure! The gpx file includes a handful of campsites and campgrounds! Campsites are few and far between in the area, so be prepared to use one of the campgrounds included in the route, or hit a hotel!
